Improve Indoor Air Naturally by Using Plants

January 30, 2018

Did you know that one of the most effective ways to improve your indoor air quality is to use plants to filter out VOCs? Using plants for air purification is an easy and affordable way to improve the quality of your indoor air.

Many people are shocked to learn that indoor air can be 2-5 times as contaminated as outdoor air in some places. Substances like chemical-based cleaners, air fresheners, fragrances and detergents pollute indoor air and contribute to poor indoor air quality. Since indoor air is often stagnant (especially during the colder months of the year), pollutants often reach toxic levels.

Thanks to a NASA study completed in the 1980’s scientists discovered that plants are just as effective, if not more effective, in filtering out airborne pollutants than expensive home air filtration systems. Further research has narrowed down which plants are the best at filtering indoor air and which plants filter which chemicals the best. Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but certain plants also eliminate significant amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and/or trichloroethylene.

The following plants have been recommended for indoor air purification (see infographic for more information regarding toxins and care):

  1. African Violets
  2. Aloe Vera
  3. Areca Palm
  4. Barberton Daisy
  5. Boston Fern
  6. Chinese Evergreen
  7. Chrysanthemum
  8. Devil’s Ivy
  9. Dracaena
  10. English Ivy
  11. Heart Leaf Philodendron
  12. Janet Craig
  13. Peace Lily
  14. Snake plant
  15. Spider plant

There are a number of ways you can further reduce the amount of indoor air pollution in your home. In addition to using plants, a.) Allow fresh air to circulate through open windows and doors when the weather permits. b) Make sure you turn on exhaust vents in the bathrooms and when cooking c.) Avoid purchasing any household products and cleaners containing harsh chemical ingredients. Make a commitment to achieve cleaner indoor air so you and your family can breathe better.
